The third goal did arrive 20 minutes from time, and again it came from Muller, who took a pass from Mark van Bommel and eluded three defenders before slotting his shot into the bottom left corner.

Fuchs fired home a free kick five minutes from time, but his team must now beat Hannover next weekend to have any chance of staying up.

Second-half goals from Mesut Ozil and Hugo Almeida provided Bremen with its 2-0 win, leaving the club two points clear of fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen, which was held to a 1-1 draw by last-placed Hertha Berlin, officially relegating the club.

Marco Stiepermann's goal nine minutes from time helped Borussia Dortmund earn a 1-1 draw with Wolfsburg, Freiburg secured its safety by finishing 2-2 against Koln, while two goals from Prince Tagoe in the last 10 minutes helped Hoffenheim rally for a 2-1 win over Eintracht.

Hamburg hammered Nurnberg, 4-0, with two goals from Mladen Petric, Hannover moved two points clear of the bottom three with a 6-1 thrashing of Monchengladbach and Stuttgart got two goals from Ciprian Marica to claim a 2-2 draw with Mainz.
